3. Completely Free Vaccines, Including New RSV & Shingles Shots (2026 Update)

The Problem: Vaccines aren’t cheap. A shingles vaccine (Shingrix) can cost $150–$300 per dose out of pocket. RSV vaccines are around $200+. Yet starting in 2023, and continuing through 2026, Medicare made all ACIP-recommended adult vaccines completely free with zero cost-sharing.
What’s Covered at No Cost (2026 & Beyond):
Routine Vaccines
- Flu shot: Yearly (covered through Part D or Part B)
- Pneumococcal vaccines: One dose each of PCV15/20 and PPSV23
- COVID-19 vaccine & boosters: As needed, annually
- Shingles (Shingrix): Two-dose series (fully covered)
- Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV): Brand-new coverage for 60+ (single dose)
- Hepatitis B: For high-risk individuals
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis booster: One dose
Why This Changed: The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 removed cost-sharing barriers. Beginning in 2023, Medicare Part D insurers must waive deductibles and copayments for all ACIP-recommended vaccines for adults.
Real Numbers: The RSV vaccine alone prevents a virus that hospitalizes 14,000+ seniors annually. One hospitalization costs Medicare $15,000+. Free vaccines = prevention investment.
Action Item: Ask your doctor which vaccines you’re due for at your next visit. Don’t leave these on the table just because you didn’t know they were free.
